Yahoo Answers saves the day!

So the written surveys have been trickling in, but none of them are particularly enlightening (might be partially my fault because the questions are not particularly leading), but I've recently been experimenting with posting mini-surveys online. I thought of this earlier, but could not find any HSM fan sites or forums in which posting was easy and response was quick. Then I saw Sabrina's blog and I was re-inspired. I posted a topic on an HSM forum, but no response. Then I posted three questions on Yahoo Answers and... wham! Loads of responses in an hour.

Although the responses are not necessarily articulate, it is still interesting to see the variety of reactions I get to the questions. I will definitely use this site as a resource!

Here are the threads I started. Take into account these questions were experimental and not necessarily getting to the heart of the issue (but what IS the heart of the issue?)
Survey
Why do people hate High School Musical?
Who do you think is the most popular Disney Channel star?

Here are some other relevant threads, started by others:
Why is HSM popular?
High School Musical????!!!!?
Why does Disney Channel try to create pop stars?
Why do people watch the Disney Channel?

And there's more where that came from.

If anyone has an idea for a question that will spark a lot of response, I'd love to hear it.

The variety of sources on this blog really help an outsider of this subculture or genre get an informed look. The post about self-reflexivity is really important because it shows that you both acknowledge your own position, and you inform your readers of your position, as well. Posting several videos is a useful visual component, and the surveys/interviews are also a useful piece offering insight. you mention that they may have been more effective if the questions were more open-ended. If you have time, you may want to resend a short survey to your participants with such questions. You may get more relevatory responses. Very insightful and thoughtful blog though!

Hi,
I think you've choosen an interesting topic here, but now its time to lay into one direction. 3 ideas that I have.
I'm personally most intrigued by what the listeners take from this music. Are there moral lessons being dispelled on the listener? Are they effective or are they just there to make the children's parents feel better?
Also, is this just a cycle? Britney Spears and all sorts of others were on Micky Mouse Club, then became pop stars independently of Disney, and now serve as questionable role-models for kids. The girl in high school musical may serve as an example.
Further, is Disney just a machine for pop stars? I think it may serve as the perfect example of consumer marketing.
It's a fairly interesting topic, and its definately awesome that it's something you grew up with and have watched develope. Good Luck!

Miriam,
I think you make a good point about adding visuals. From an aesthetic standpoint, my blog is too overloaded with text and it's hard to read it straight through. I linked to some youtube videos in the very beginning, but it would be helpful to have them available to click on within the blog, if not for any other reason than to break up the monotony of text.

I think I'm going to use Yahoo! Answers to post more leading questions, so I can get more lengthy or telling responses (although the people who answer aren't necessarily the most articulate). This way, I don't have to make anyone who's already filled out a survey fill one out again.

Todd,
I do need to 'lay into one direction' and I've been thinking about it for a while. My interviews from Thanksgiving break were helpful in directing me. I think I'm going to focus on the value structure in pop created by Disney channel, and how it conflicts or mirrors the personal lives of the stars. I don't think there are necessarily moral 'lessons' dispelled on the listener or viewer, but I do think that a lot of Disney channel music is a blatant reflection of some American (Christian?) ideals.

I want to combine this discussion with one about the commercial reality of the music/movies that Disney makes, and how this relates (opposes?) the value structure they've created. I have a good resource-- "The great tween buying machine: capturing your share of the multi-billion-dollar tween market" that I'm going to try to relate to Disney's strategies.

The cycle question is interesting, and I will definitely mention the members of the Mickey Mouse Club that proceeded to become famous and Hilary Duff from Lizzy McGuire, but whether or not this is a 'cycle' seems somewhat irrelevant to me. I think pop music is somewhat cyclical in general, and opening that up would be quite the can of worms.
